Frankfurt Eastend
written by gemma81de on April 27th, 2008 (2 votes)

If you are in Frankfurt and don’t want to see the typical tourist spots you could check out the eastern part instead. There you can find the industrial port, built in 1908 (which you can only see from the outside unfortunately since the entry is forbidden) as well as ancient rail tracks that aren’t used anymore, old cranes and the old Grossmarkthalle, one of the most famous market halls in Germany, built in the 1920s.

The Grossmarkthalle is closed since 2004 and planned to be the new home of the European Central Bank by 2010. Between the port and the Grossmarkthalle there is a large area directly at the river that is sometimes used by musicians and other artists to practice without disturbing other people. Getting closer to the city the “promenade” becomes more crowded and lined by mobile bars and cafes.
