Festival of Semana Santa

The Semana Santa in Spain is a Christian celebration of the passion of Christ where and it's completely different from the rest of the world. They celebrate it by walking around the streets of the city with really big and heavy figures of the Christian saints carrying it on their own shoulders for hours, most of them make it the whole day, but many have to change because its about 40-80 kg for each person.

You see the festivity as it was held already in the 16th century. The parade starts with the arriving of Jesus to Jerusalem till his resurrection. The main attractions of the festivity are the costumes that people wear. Many know the costumes from a historic racist group from States called Klu Klux Klan, with the white coned mask. The cut of costumes is originally from this celebration, but with all the colours and shapes that anyone can imagine. It’s originally celebrated during the Easter time and so the dates are different every year. You could also eat some traditional dishes from all over Spain.

Don’t expect anything meaty, because according to the Christian tradition no-one eats meat at that time. My advice is that don’t try to see this kind of celebration in some big city, because the best ones are in smaller towns or even better around the villages. And remember that the traditions and celebrating Christian holidays are much stronger in south of Spain. So if you are in Spain at Easter time, the best is to look for some information because it’s different in every place. The festivities that I can recommend are from the city called Jaén where you can get the whole info about it on this link: http://usuarios.lycos.es/semanasantaenjaen/
