Dangerous Quicksands in Arnside

Arnside is a village on the River Kent estuary at the upstream end of Morecambe Bay. The bay is an expanse of dangerous shifting quick-sands filled twice daily by a rapidly moving tidal bore. It's a dangerous place for the unwary and does occasionally claim lives, none so tragic as the internationally reported loss of 23 Chinese cockle pickers in 2004 "http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4238209.stm":http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4238209.stm

Despite the dangers, there is a public right of way across the bay from Arnside to Grange-over-Sands. It’s probably best not to attempt the crossing yourself, but organized walks of about 8 miles are led by The Queen’s Guide to the Sands, Cedric Robinson http://www.lakestay.co.uk/sandpilot.html. He regularly checks the ever-changing route, marking the latest safest way with fresh willow sticks.

Arnside itself is a quiet place with a pier, a railway station and viaduct, a promenade, a few small shops, and three pubs. On one of many family outings there as a child I do remember seeing one drama unfold as the tide encroached on a Rover 2000 stuck in the mud. We left before it was rescued, so I’ve no idea whether it met a watery end.

You can safely walk out along the concrete base under the viaduct when the tide is out, which provides a sense of the scale of the bay. The river channel is quite shallow, but don’t forget your wellies or you will get wet feet.
