A house with a tower doesn’t have to be the Tower of London. In Stadthagen it is Kommunikationszentrum Alte Polizei (short: Apo) (communication centre of former/old police), a place to meet with a café, youth-centre, a stage, a gallery and lots of meeting points.
In early 80th the former youth- and culture-centre in Herminen Street was closed under protest, but a solution was found giving the culture youth a house in good neighborhood, right next to museum Amtpforte and the old castle (built up in Weserrenaissance). After a big damage caused by water end of 1990th everything was modernized. On the top of the building you have offices now, second floor has a stage, the spot for old people, a bar and meeting rooms, on the first floor there is a café (with wireless internet and faire trade products). The cellar is still for youth and that is what makes the former police so special for me.
I come from a very small village and I have always wanted to leave (you know the song “smalltown”???). A good chance for me was going to school to Stadthagen, a big city like I thought. But it wasn’t that big… Hmm… So what to do with all your free time, being 13 and bored? Look for strange friends and enjoy the time with them. The people I came in contact with where all cellar-kids, so we were always hanging around in the youth-cellar of former police. For me it was like a home. We helped cooking for band who came there, organized concerts, had political meetings and so I got involved in culture life step by step and got the chance to make my first exhibition with pictures (when the damage caused by water happened). Now I am member of former-police-community (join if you are near Stadthagen!!!), still like to go there, but not only because of knowing people working there since its nearly 15 years now.
These days my exhibition of Poetry In Motion (www.lomohomes.com/PoetryInMotion) takes place till end of June 2007. There are lots of cultural highlight of “Stadthagen liest Lyrik” in former police. You find lots of information on their website.
Oh… before I forget it: every summer there is one special event organized by former police called “fiskuß”. It is a giant culture party around the castle and in its park. There are spots for children, there is food, music, theatre… but that is another Lomolocation…
