Coatepec

Coatepec is a small town near Xalapa, the capital of the state of Veracruz in México. It is famous because of its coffee plantations, which are a part of the coffee production process. There are places called “beneficios” that are: the places where the coffee is dried and processed.
If you take the old road that goes from Coatepec to Las Trancas, you can find the Martinez Hachiti beneficio, where I met Mr Hipólito. He is the keeper of it, he started working there when he was 7 (he is now 74, do the math) and talk about the good past times of his life. He showed me all the factory and we were talking for hours about his life and I discovered a new way of seeing things. He is the most wonderful, sensitive person I’ve had met in a couple of years. He also does this marvelous handcrafts with wood from the coffee trees, fantastic animals that lived inside his imagination. To go there and have the pleasure to talk to somebody like him is one of the greatest experiences you can have if you travel to this place. By the way, if you go there tell him to show you the waterfall that is in the back of the “beneficio”.
