Bauhaus

Dessau is a small city 100 km south of Berlin. It is pilgrimage town for all those architecture addicts (that in some cases coincide with lomo addicts, or lomographers).
In 1925 the second school of Bauhaus was build, as the first school in Weimar was closed. So there you can find the mythic Bauhaus building, almost in the same appearance as it worked during the 20’s (http://www.bauhaus-dessau.de/en/history.asp?p=bauhausbuilding).

As the masters of the school lived there, they built for the lecturers the Masters Houses: a detached house for the director: Walter Gropius, and three semidetached houses for the other masters: László Moholy-Nagy and Lyonel Feininger, Georg Muche and Oskar Schlemmer, and Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee (http://www.bauhaus-dessau.de/en/history.asp?p=meister).

As they teach the new way of thinking architecture, they put on practice some of their ideas, so Dessau has a lot to discover: Employment Office, Restaurant Kornhaus, and so on. But apart from visiting the main building and the Master Houses, I recommend to you to go for a walk through Törten Estate, an early way of building low-cost houses.

You can go to Dessau from Berlin by train, as it is a 90 min journey. At the station you can let a bike, as the main attractions are quite far ones from the others. Otherwise, if you are not involved with climate change, you can rent a car.

Great, thanks for this. I'm off to Berlin soon so will take a trip to Dessau. Never realised so many bauhaus buildings are there.
