Basilica de Guadalupe

The Guadalupe day on the 12th of December is the national festivity of the brunette Virgin Guadalupe. Some people say that everybody is guadalupano in Mexico, it doesn't actually matter what religion they practice... well, that's an exaggeration; I wasn't raised as a Catholic, so I didn't understand (I still don't understand) that way of expressing faith. I had never been at the Guadalupe Basilica (something quite irregular for someone who lives so near it), but last December 12 I visited it with some few fellow photographers.

The Guadalupe day on the 12th of December is the national festivity of the brunette Virgin Guadalupe. Some people say that everybody is guadalupano in Mexico, it doesn’t actually matter what religion they practice… well, that’s an exaggeration; I wasn’t raised as a Catholic, so I didn’t understand (I still don’t understand) that way of expressing faith. I had never been at the Guadalupe Basilica (something quite irregular for someone who lives so near it), but last December 12 I visited it with some few fellow photographers.

I was not prepared for that shock… thousands of people visiting the place, hundreds of peoples carrying Guadalupe icons in every form and size, tens of dance groups performing traditional dances in honor of Guadalupe… and tons of photographers. A mixture of cultures: Catholic and pagan, occidental and indigenous, tradition and modernity and the mixture of social classes. To match with the event, accidentally I 2-exposed some images, coincidentally from some church (I’m not sure where were the first shots taken, probably Zacatecas… but who knows). Pay attention to the dance groups, but if you are religious you can also assist to the mass.

The Guadalupe Basilica is in general an interesting place to visit, but the day to be there it’s the 12 of December. You can even find some tours to the place on that day.
Don’t be naïve, pay attention, ‘cause, as you people know, sometimes this festivities attract some crooks. For example, never buy film rolls outside the place… the price is too high: it’s a good idea to carry enough rolls.

Each year a group from my photography school visits the place, so if you are interested maybe you could go with us… just drop a few lines at my Lomohome.
