Ajaccio
written by dudizm on April 27th, 2008 (2 votes)

Ajaccio is situated on the west coast of Corsica, on the bottom of gulf of Ajaccio, between Gravona and the Sanguinaires Islands. This city was occupied for a very long time by people from Genoa and Corsica had no rights from citizenship there. They settled in the east of the city on the other side of Piazza of Olmo which is now the FESCH Street named after the famous cardinal Fesch, uncle of Napoleon and big art collector. Besides the Art Museum, Fesch gave his name to a lot of places, monuments and shops.

The region of Ajaccio and its hinterland is constituted by three big valleys. Very numerous routes for hiking are accessible cross the scrubland and offer the walkers a wide range of panoramas. The port and its daily market, its narrow streets, its long beaches, its history, its monuments and international airport make this city the administrative and cultural capital of Corsica.
