My Year in Analogue: The Travel Issue

4

2014 has been a year of many travels for me. Lucky, I know. Let me show you a few photos that I have taken during my adventures far away from home.

In March, my first adventure took me to Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark and one of my most favorite places in the world. The city looks incredible no matter what time of the year you visit it. Copenhagen’s architecture is pure and simple, and the Danish people are kind and friendly. The city is worth a visit and is on my travel list regularly.

On Easter, I hiked through the Harz Mountains. They say it‘s the land of German fairy tales: steep-roofed houses with tiny windows, narrow cobblestone streets, dark forests, rushing streams, and stormy mountains. The German poet Heinrich Heine wrote an account of his trip through this area called, “The Harz Journey.” You can get a glimpse of what it was like in the early 1800’s:

During my stay, I visited some small towns. Have a look at three photos each of Ilsenburg, Wernigerode, Goslar, and Halberstadt.

In May, I flew to Peru for a trip though the land and some parts of Bolivia. Traveling to Peru had been a dream for a long time. In fact, it was one of the most adventurous and exciting places I have been to so far. I fell in love with their cuisine and the very different, rough landscape. From the mountains up to the coast, Peru is an exciting country with friendly people and a rich history. I especially recommend Cuzco. No need to mention that I shot more than 20 rolls of film during those weeks of pure bliss.

In June, a bunch of great lomographers held the first LomoWochenende in Kassel, a German city popular for the documenta exhibition. I met some fantastic lomographers and spent a great weekend with those analogue enthusiasts, as well as learned to develop film by myself. Pretty cool, eh?

I also spent three sunny days in July in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic and my first city crush. I have been to it a dozen times but still get goosebumps when I take a look at its skyline with the typical rooftops and the art nouveau architecture. Prague is old and romantic but also modern and loud. Don’t leave the city without trying some trdelník or a good Czech beer.

As often as I am in Prague or London, I also regularly visit Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. You can enjoy the flair and the Swedish vibes especially during summer. In 2014, I met my lovely friend Susanne from Paris there to celebrate her birthday at the end of August. Furthermore, we took part in the Propaganda Festival and had a lot of fun although it had been raining so much. That‘s the reason why I took so little photos.

I visit London usually once a year. Last year, I did so again in early November. It was a bit weird that London was already illuminated by Christmas lights and decorations. The British capital and metropolis has its unique charm and can get overcrowded pretty fast, especially on Oxford Street and during the time when people do their Christmas shopping. But I didn’t really mind. When I set foot on London (under)ground after leaving the plane, I felt like coming home. Here are some panorama shots of Portobello Road.

Erfurt, a city in middle Germany, was my last travel destination last year. I haven‘t been there before but heard a lot about its beauty. And yes, the old city is really elegant although the rain wrecked my photos. If you decide to visit Erfurt, do so during Christmas time because the Christmas market is delightful.

All in all I spent a lot time traveling during the past year, and I really enjoyed it. Hopefully, 2015 will hold some more travel experiences for me.
