Who doesn’t want getting their pictures taken during their birthdays?
As the birthday candles pile up in one corner, so will the changes in our bodies and outlook in life. Photographer Lucy Hilmer cheerfully embraced the many changes in her life with a single photo each time she celebrated her birthday for the past 40 years.
But those aren’t just simple washed out photos of herself, she’s been taking nude self-portraits in a span of four decades. Hilmer shot her series of nude self-portraits by wearing just her white underpants, socks and shoes. She started the series on her 29th birthday. She is turning 70 years old in 2015.
What makes Hilmer’s series of self-portraits appealing is the absence of sexual tension and sensuality. The portraits may be showcasing the bare form and shape of the female human body but they are done so with taste and sometimes, humor. Hilmer openly accepted the transformation that time and age will bring to her body and she chose to celebrate and photograph those changes for all the world to see.
Hilmer will soon publish a book “Birthday Suits & Other Suits” along with a film in an effort to “peel off society’s ‘pretty girl’ label.”
