Newcomer of the Week: -polka

He regards Lomography as a perfect complement to his day job as a nurse. So everyday, with the 10 Rules of Lomography in mind, he tries to experiment and shoot from the hip. Here's our Newcomer of the Week, Denis Seigle or -polka!

Denis Seigle aka polka-

Name: Denis Seigle
LomoHome: polka-
Location: Lyon, France

Please tell us something about yourself.

I am a nurse. Thanks to the contrast, colors, and warmth of lomographs, I forget the white and cold atmosphere of the hospital. My job does not tolerate any improvisation but with lomography, risk-taking is a constant. I appreciate this contrast between these two parts of my life. I have a Peter Pan syndrome and my friends say that Lomography is not a good medicine for me and I don’t understand why.

How did you find the Community and who/what convinced you to join?

I bought my first lomography camera which is a La Sardina 8Ball in the library-gallery DATTA in Lyon, The store manager ordered some films for me by logging into the website of Lomography. I suddenly discovered that there was a large community of people fascinated by this creative lifestyle. On his computer, I saw some pictures and I was amazed!

As you have read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?

My favorite rule is Rule #4: “Try the shot from the hip.” This is my leitmotif every day.

Rule #5 (Approach the objects of your Lomographic desire as close as possible) is a real challenge for me because it is against my personality. I am too shy. Applying this rule however is a good exercise for my behavioral therapy!

In this digital age, why still film?

I don’t really like the steps of the digital camera: press the button, look at the LCD screen… and delete! Soon made, soon forgotten… Learn to be patient and give up all control are some virtues of Lomography!

Your favorite analogue camera as of the moment ? Why?

I can not go out without my LC-A! The LC-A camera is really the cornerstone of the Lomographic movement. When I put it in my backpack, it’s the whole history of Lomography that accompany me.

What is the Lomography camera you’d want to have someday?

Without hesitation, the LC-Wide camera! The 17mm ultra-wide Lens takes stunning wide-angle photos. The wide angle effect creates a unique ambiance on the photos.

Any song or move you live by?

The film Into the wild was a shock to me. It is a journey unfortunately tragic but lived mindfully. Lomography is also a journey with the same sense of freedom, a search for simple things far from the complexity of the world.

Share you current favorite Lomograph, could be yours or a friend’s. Why?

Pictures of litleandi taken with the LC-Wide are fabulous! The colors and compositions are great. On his Lomohome, there are no superfluous pictures. Each photo seems to convey a story. It is very inspiring!

What are you looking forward to in our Community?

Tipster is my favorite section of the magazine. First, I look for shared experiences: sharing a bit of photographic technique, cultures and ways of life in our global community. The experience of others allows me to find, little by little, my own style.
