A Healing Practice

Recovering from a life-changing accident through yoga, documented on film.

My name is Valentina Delille. On the 2nd of July this year, after coming from yoga class, I got hit by a truck. I went under the wheel; the driver reversed on me as well. I was left with fractures on my left inferior pubic ramus and acetabulum, and right toe. As a very active person it has been quite a challenge to deal with my poor body being in such a state. But even at my worst, in the hospital, I never forgot about my practice. During the three days that I was immobilized I concentrated on my breathing, sending my breath to my pelvis and down my toe, to the top of my head and imagined pointing, spreading and flexing my toes again.

It’s been a little over a month since the accident. I’m doing much better and I can feel that my body is healing every second of every day. I truly think I wouldn’t be so fast on my way to recovery if I didn’t keep up with my practice with my wonderful yoga teacher Lili Millar, who I’ve nicknamed my healing totem. Each practice is different, adjusting to what my body and mind needs. Lili understands the complexity of the human body and mind, and knows how to keep things flowing in the right direction – something you truly couldn’t get from an exercise plan.

For this day’s practice, we focused on pranayamas. Again, Lili mastered the balance of energizing my mind with Kapalabhati, Ujjayi, and Lion’s Breath, as well as doing Nadi Sodhana at the end of the practice to re-balance both sides of my body.

My practice includes everything from weights to detoxing twists, stretches, downward dogs, dolphins planks, bow poses, and many more. Who knew one could do so much with so many physical limitations? When your mind is strong, so is your body. This accident has proven to me that there are no limits to what we can do.

And of course, no practice should be done without the supervision of a lovely Lomocat!
