My First Lomo Affair: Litumai and her Diana Mini

She was supposed to get a Diana F+ camera but ended up with its equally charming small sister Diana Mini. Find out why Andrea Lituma, litumai in the Lomography Community, considers this mishap as "the best mistake ever" in this edition of My First Lomo Affair!

Please tell us more about yourself.

I’m a biologist with special interest in sustainable development and efficient resource management. I have always had a special interest in photography. As a kid, I started with the Kodak 110 format before moving to the 35 mm. When I was responsible enough, my dad gave me his Zeiss Ikon Contaflex. I love that camera.

Some people would think that because I’m a scientist I wouldn’t enjoy and understand the free spirit of Lomography. However, I think it’s the complete opposite. It makes me step out of the office, clear my body and mind, and do something completely different. Plus, I get to capture really funny, strange, and sometimes upsetting angles of people, places, and activities.

When was your first try of a Lomography camera or film? What product was it?

I think it was around 2009. It was a Diana F+ Dreamer.

Was the Lomography product yours or maybe you borrowed it from a relative or friend?

When a friend came to Lima for a visit and brought her Diana F+ Dreamer.

How was your experience? Any funny or strange occurrences upon using the camera?

We went for a long walk so she could make some magic happen. Of course I didn’t have any idea of how special that camera was. She tried explaining how exciting the world of Lomography is but I wasn’t really interested at that time. She shot a couple of pictures and that was it. When she got the film developed, we saw that the pictures weren’t what we expected. It was a little disappointing but she kept on using it.

Have you used that Lomography product again? Why or why not?

I think it was a year later when I found the Lomography website. I started reading and realized we had been using the wrong film, at the wrong time and at the wrong lighting condition. I decided I wanted a Diana F+ too. I asked my sister to buy one but she got confused! I ended up with a Diana Mini! Totally her best mistake ever!

Can you share us your favourite or most memorable shot from that First Lomo Affair of yours? Why this one?

This photo was taken on 2011. In March 2012, it was exhibited in the first photographic exposition (Primera Bienal de fotografia de Lima) in Lima. It was featured in a special section for Diana cameras.

How did it affect your love for Lomography/film photography?

It made me realize that even if you use the wrong film or setting, you can still get a perfect picture!
