Aside from his amazing analogue photography skills, our newest LomoGuru is also equipped with totally rad fingerboarding tricks. Let’s get to know one of the brains behind the successful LomoWochenende 2014, our LomoGuru of the Week, Fabian Schreiter, best-known in the Community as faaabii!

Tell us about yourself.

I am an engineer in media technologies focusing on online media. Right now, everything is very exciting because I recently got a new job as an online editor in Stuttgart. Now, I have to get a lot of things done. It’s not that easy to move hundreds of kilometers. In the end, I’m really happy to keep my life interesting and, of course, for the new possibilities to shoot photos!

Since when I was just 14 years old, I’ve been fascinated with skateboarding, but some serious injuries switch my focus on fingerboarding more. You may think it is just a small toy for kids, but you really need some skills to do all the tricks. Next to photography, fingerboarding is one of the best things that ever happened to me. I got friends all over the world. I traveled around Europe, even to the U.S., and I had really great experiences.

Being injured also forced me to take my father’s camera with me to take photos and record small clips of my friends skating. Today, I’m mostly into photography, especially Lomography. I like that colorful images and the attitude that your pictures don’t have to be perfect.

In addition to these, I love biking, reading books, and discovering the online and offline world!

Tell us something about your LomoHome’s name. Why did you decide to have that username?

faaabii… Three times an ‘a’ and two times an ‘i’! Everyone calls me Fabi and I remember that I started using this nickname in another community when all the other possibilities were no longer available. Sometimes, I’m thinking about using other names because a lot of people can’t remember using exactly three ‘a’ and two ‘i’. But once you choose you nickname, you have to stick with it.

In fingerboarding, my nickname’s ‘afrobi’, a composition of the look of my haircut back then and my name. This name followed me over the years and I love and hate it at the same time.

Share with us your most memorable experience in the Lomographic Community.

There are some online events I keep in my mind like the day I’ve got the Photo of the Day on the German and the International Lomography website or when I found out that I won my first competition.

On the other hand, there is the ‘real life experience’ – the LomoWochenende 2014 – an event for lomographers I arranged with the help of others. It was great to meet all the crazy people behind their well-known nicknames!

Have you actually met people in the Community that you now consider as close friends? If yes, name at least one of them.

lomo-nina and maxwellmaxen are fingerboarders, too. We knew each other before we got into lomography.

There have been exactly 32 lomographers that attended the LomoWochenende. I met four of them, stellastellar, frauspatzi, trash-gordon-from-outer-space, and thegrump, for the second time. Together, we had endless Skype conversations about planning that weekend and even if it hasn’t been easy all the time, , I think we all won some good friends.

And of course there was a huge amount of great people I met for the first time: pearlgirl77, freakoftheweek, hafenperle, vivie, zark, crincle, kleinerkaries, katinkaja and nia_ffm to name but a few. Unfortunately, it was just a single weekend so I didn’t get the chance to know every single one. I think (and I am hoping) there will be further weekends and several other events in the future to meet them and all the other lomographers again!

Do you think you’ll still be taking Lomographs in the next 5 years? Why?

Right now, I can’t imagine stopping shooting film! There are so many possibilities, so many cameras, so many different films, so many places to discover. It changes your view on your environment! There are a lot of great personalities I met because of Lomography and I’m sure there will be even more… I think I’m still in the beginning of a great thing which will be a strong part of my further life! That sounds kinda cheesy, but who cares!

What is your favorite Lomo camera and why? Do you have any memorable experiences using this camera?

When I take a look at my camera equipment, there are a few cameras that I really like, but my all time favorite is still the LC-A+. It’s small, easy to use, and almost all pictures turn out well! It’s followed by the Horizon Perfekt and the Sprocket Rocket, another great cameras with their signature panoramic output! It’s really difficult to commit myself to only one camera.

Please share with us your favorite Lomographic shot and explain why you love that particular image.

It is still this Ferris wheel, which appears behind the snowy slope. It’s a shot from my very first filmswap with lomo-nina. I shot this with an expired roll of Fuji Sensia 200 during my vacation in Grand Canary. That Ferris wheel stands next to my accommodation and I used the Lomography Splitzer to just get the wheel in the sky.

Later on, lomo-nina got the film and went snowboarding in Switzerland. The whole film swap turned out amazing! There are a lot of great pictures and funny coincidences. I shot palmtrees, she shot snowy firs. I shot a bungalow rental, she shot a ski lodge. When we got this film back, we both freaked out with the results!

Please share a Lomograph you wish you had taken and explain why.

There is a whole bunch of lomographs I really appreciate but the first one that popped up in my mind is a Ferris Wheel again. This great shot by fruchtzwerg_hh was one of the factors that convinced me to get a Horizon Perfekt. I love that surreal wavy form of the wheel! That’s pure inspiration!

What’s the best Lomographic or photography advice you think you have given?

“Get an LC-A!”

“You should try developing C41 by yourself, it’s easier than you think!”

If there’s one song or movie that best describes your Lomo life, which one is it and why?

This is a hard question because “my Lomo life” changes every day with my personal feelings. There is not just one movie or one song, which would describe the whole variety of Lomography. When I was just starting to develop in C41, I remember listening to Super700’s album “Under The No Sky” a lot:

In my point of view, this has a very emotional and happy sound. “Live Your Life With Grace” let me remember standing in my kitchen turning the developing tank and looking forward to my latest pictures. Hearing this song makes me happy! Oh, and by the way, I love the atmosphere in its official music video.

Is there any advice you can give to new analogue shooters?

Follow your own style and never ever give up. If you don’t like your first shots, just keep trying! You should definitely try developing film by yourself! It’s a lot easier than you think. And try to meet with other lomographers in your area. It’s always fun to be with people sharing your obsession! Lomo on! :)
