Ossian Brown's 'Haunted Air'

We know summer has just arrived and we're still a few months away from the holiday we're about to feature here, but allow us to give you the chills through this macabre series of vintage Halloween photographs collated by artist and musician Ossian Brown.

People sure had a different, seemingly more sinister approach at celebrating Halloween in bygone days. Whereas today the norm is to dress up as some of this age’s more beloved characters and creatures, pop culture icons, and other prominent celebrities, about half a century ago and beyond people apparently liked to dress up as strange supernatural beings. And it’s not just the adults who do this, but youngsters as well. Ossian Brown has compiled a number of anonymous photographs depicting this in the book Haunted Air (2011), dating between 1875 and 1955 and sourced from family albums.

Here are a few photographs from “Haunted Air” courtesy of Beautiful Decay. I’ve always had a penchant for strange things, and while I am indeed fascinated with this collection, simply looking at these photos still gives me that eerie, unsettling feeling.

Great photos! People sure had fun in those days. Not like now, where they just look at their cell phone all the time.
