Exquisitely Gloomy Black and Whites by Cody Thomas

Sometimes, experiments and curiosity yield the best results. This is what photographer Cody Thomas discovered when he tried out black and white film photography with his Holga camera. See more of his black and white photos after the jump.

Calm, serene, and sometimes soothing – these are some of the things that you can take away from Portland-based photographer Cody Thomas’ work in black and white film.

Thomas’ choice in black and white film worked because of the soft focusing of his photographs. Each black and white still is like a snippet from a storybook that tells a short story or two with just a glance. His scratchy and almost foggy snapshots remind us of hazy dreams or scenes from silent movies.

Thomas shoots with a Holga camera among other things. He is also an illustrator, animator and painter. You can see more of his work in his website, Behance profile, and Tumblr.
