Spike your hair up ala Simonon, raise the UK flag, and scream out with this week’s playlist featuring songs from The Clash.
Their music is straight-out punk but goes sideways when it comes to hints of influences. Their style is iconic, each member with distinct images. Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and Joe Strummer were The Clash and The Clash was them. They owned their music but the industry never owned them.
The Clash’s eponymous album from 1977 kicked the speakers in whenever it was played. From rhythmic numbers that give out a snapping drum line, a steady and powerful bass, and loud but controlled vocals – The Clash really knew how to mix things up to great effect. Their music is the epitomy of their name; it was a beautiful clash of powerful punk themes and political ideas. And everything was wrapped nicely in a punk package complete with UK flag for a ribbon.
