In commemoration of Bike Month, or Bike Week in certain places, design and technology blog Gizmodo has collated these wonderful advertisements for bicycles from the 19th century. Check some of them out after the jump!
The late 1800s witnessed the surge of the popularity of the bicycle, and as such, bicycle historians often refer to this period as the “golden age” of cycling. These advertisements were from that period. As you can see in the samples that we have here, they’re most certainly nothing like any of the ads we see today. All are sophisticated-looking and even look like works of art themselves! While cycling these days is more often than not associated to fitness and recreation, it’s just amazing how, based on these ads, a long time ago they were an essential means of transportation for all classes.
Here at Lomography, we also have our own little way of celebrating Bike Month! Be sure to check out our ongoing Let’s Go Biking Rumble to find out how you can join!
