My Day in Analogue: My Spring in Fuji Instax Mini

A few years ago, I thought I could use a photography boost so I figured out a project for myself. For the entire spring, I took one picture a day using only Fuji Instax Film. Check out my season in analogue.

About two years ago, I stopped photographing frequently. My life changed a lot and I just didn’t find the time and energy to focus on photographing, going to the lab to have my film developed, and spending my evenings behind my computer scanning negatives.

I missed photography, though. At the first day of spring, I decided I needed a change: I needed to start photographing again. I decided to start a little project – to photograph every day during the whole season of spring.

A few years earlier, I bought Fuji Instax Mini Film in bulk. I had been saving the film because I thought it was too precious; I wanted to use it only at special occasions. But at that time, I suddenly realized that it makes no sense to save your film for special moments. And suddenly, all the pieces fell together: I figured out I could use my Fuji Instax Mini Film stock to take one picture a day, during the entire season. Thus, my instant spring project was born.

And that’s exactly what happened. The Fuji Instax Mini turned out to be perfect for my spring project. I didn’t have to go to the lab to have my film developed, it didn’t take a lot of time to scan my pictures… I just had to take my camera with me everyday and focus on photographing. And best of it all, I got immediate results, which motivated me to keep photographing. Not all pictures turned out well, but that didn’t bother me. The most important thing for me was just to keep photographing.

That spring, I had to travel four hours a day for my job so I spent a lot of time on trains and in railway stations, which you can see on my pictures. I also just moved to Antwerp in Belgium and I was discovering (and falling in love with) my new city. I found an lovely apartment in Antwerp and spent hours and hours watching the view. I did a business trip to London and small city trips to Rotterdam and Paris. I had friends coming over and drank a lot of coffee (as usual). I’ll post some of my favorite instants in this article, but if you want to see more, check out my album.

It turned out to be a wonderful season and I’m so glad I documented it with my Diana F+ and LC-A. So my advice is that if you ever feel like you’re not photographing enough, start a project. Force yourself to take pictures every single day and take it easy: use instant film for instant photography satisfaction, and you’ll soon be back on track!
