Today's featured biopic is a 2012 television film which depicts the tumultuous and controversial relationship between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
Dame Elizabeth Taylor remains an influential figure in the film world even after her passing, still seen as one of the brightest and most beautiful Hollywood stars ever to grace the silver screen. However, her highly publicized personal life — especially her controversial eight marriages to seven husbands — also kept her under constant fire. Her tumultuous relationship with Welsh actor Richard Burton, which was particularly under constant public scrutiny and was never out of news, was the focus of a 2012 television film entitled Liz & Dick.
Actress Lindsay Lohan, who has had her share of controversy throughout her career, starred as the lovely Elizabeth Taylor, while New Zealand actor Grant Bowler played the part of Richard Burton. The film outlines the most significant events surrounding their infamous relationship, from the first time Richard first saw Elizabeth during a Hollywood party, Elizabeth’s initial dislike towards Richard, to the filming of movies that they both starred in (Cleopatra and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?), and the beginning of their affair which caused a scandal as they were both still married to others at the time.
Megan Fox, Kate Beckinsale, and Olivia Wilde were all considered for the titular role, which eventually fell on Lindsay Lohan’s lap. Rob Sharenow, Lifetime’s Executive Vice-President of Programming, was quoted as saying, “We are thrilled Lindsay will portray beloved Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor. She is one of the rare actresses who possesses the talent, beauty and intrigue to capture the spirit of such a provocative icon.” Interestingly, six year prior to the film, Lohan had posed as Elizabeth Taylor for the June 2006 issue of Interview magazine.
