You probably know him as Dave, the stepdad to three livewires in Alvin and the Chipmunks but there is more to Jason Lee than just screaming “Alviiiiin!” at the top of his voice. Read on to find out more about the actor after the jump.
Jason Leeis more famously known for his comedy roles like Dave Seville in “Alvin and the Chipmunks”, and Earl Hickey in the series “My Name is Earl” but he has also acted in other films like Vanilla Sky and Almost Famous.
Born on April 25, 1970 in Huntington Beach, Orange County, California, the Jason Lee we know today wasn’t all about acting and doing comedic sketches. He was a budding skateboarder who co-founded the skateboard company Stereo Skateboards in 1992. Lee is co-founder and co-owner of the company with Chris Pastras and had his fair share of shredding the urban landscapes of California with their self-produced skate decks.
Stereo Skateboards, which is now known as Stereo Sound Agency, sponsored team riders with the decks they produced. Jason Lee was a prominent name in the skateboarding scene during the late 80s to the early 90s with his popular move, the “360 flip.” Lee even appeared on the Sonic Youth music video “100%”, showcasing his skateboarding tricks.
But it was his participation in the cult movie classic “Mallrats” that paved the way for more of Lee’s major roles in acting. Lee struck a friendship with Mallrats director Kevin Smith and was casted to appear in future works by the director like “Chasing Amy,” “Dogma,” “Clerks II,” and “Cop Out.”
Jason Lee then went on to take leading man roles in “Heartbreakers” opposite Jenniver Love Hewitt and “Stealing Harvard” with actor Tom Green. Lee’s portrayal of petty thief Earl Hickey in the series “My Name is Earl” earned him nominations like a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series.
Cult classic fans out there may have spotted him as Jeff, the enigmatic lead singer of rock band Stillwater in Cameron Crowe’s 2000 movie, “Almost Famous”.
Jason Lee continues to be active in Stereo Sound Agency with business partner and co-founder Chris Pastras. He is still included in the professional “Classics” team roster of the company.
