Then and Now: Michaelangelo Masterpiece Gets a Sweet Recreation

One of the most popular works of art in history, a fresco painting by Michaelangelo, was recreated by a food artist using a whopping amount of sweet stuff. Find out more about this tasty rendition after the jump!

For an event celebrating Michaelangelo’s 450th death anniversary on February 18, 2014, food artist Michelle Wibowo was commissioned by British baking company Cake Angels to recreate one of the Renaissance master’s best known and finest work: The Creation of Adam, one of the breath-taking fresco paintings adorning the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling.

The challenge involved matching the scale and detail of the original masterpiece using cake decorations. After a whopping 168 hours, over 10,000 marshmallows, and around half a billion cake sprinkles of versatile and vibrant kinds, a tasty and impressive version aptly called “The Baking of Adam” was complete.

“No celebration is complete without cake and we really hope that Michelangelo would have given us his official seal of approval. The real difficulty was matching his exact scale and style but the possibilities are endless when you have so many textures and colours to choose from. It’s also really hard to stop yourself from nibbling at the masterpiece!” said Wibowo about the project.
