Newcomer of the Week: ascendingaperture

Surprisingly, his passion for photography didn't come directly from getting love at first sight with a certain camera or having peers who are shutterbugs, but from his daily explorations around the city while riding a skateboard or BMX. Get to know how our Newcomer of the Week, Chris Atkinson aka ascendingaperture, got into analogue photography!

Chris Atkinson aka ascendingaperture

Name: Chris Atkinson
LomoHome: ascendingaperture
Location: Milton Keynes, United Kingdom

Please tell us something about yourself.

35mm, 120mm, Nomad. Travelling and film is my thing!

I was born and raised in the concrete jungle of Milton Keynes. I like exploring the city on a skateboard or BMX, where my interest and passion of photography first began. I always film and shoot photographs of friends kick flipping, hoping that one day my photographs would get featured in one of the national skateboard magazines!

I moved to London to study history at university, and this is where got hit big by film photography. I stumbled upon the Lomomgraphy store on Newburgh Street and found myself walking out with a Fisheye No. 2. And there began my love of film photography. I started experimenting with multiple exposures, cross processing and long exposures and I loved the results! Soon my collection of cameras started growing!

My love of cameras and travel have brought me to where I am today. I travel to explore the world, open new doors, and shoot photographs. Whether I’ll be deep in the jungles of Cambodia or wandering the bullet ridden street of Sarajevo, I’ll always have one of my analogue friends on my shoulder!

How did you find the Community and who/what convinced you to join?

After finding the London Lomography store back in 2010, I instantly got involved. I grabbed the Lomography Fisheye No. 2 hoping to capture some old school Dog Town inspired skateboard shots! I walked out with my new 35mm friend and 3 rolls of Lomography Color Negative 800 to shoot with it! As soon as the first film had come back from the lab, I was addicted! I shot more and more film to search for more crazy effects and outrageous images! I take a camera with me everywhere now!

As you have read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?

Rule No. 3: Lomography is not an interference in your life, but part of it!

The sooner you adopt this rule the more amazing and off the wall photographs you will produce!

In this digital age, why still film?

Film is not dead!

In this digital age, film is still king! It is not a dead format! Working with film is a real pleasure, and it is photography in its original state. Everything about film is so appealing which got me addicted to it. Popping the film canister, smelling the film, loading the leader into your weapon of choice, focusing, and the unique click click sound of the shutter – you can’t get any of these from modern DSLRs or smartphones! Let alone the surprise of not knowing what photographs you are going to get when you pick up your vintage film grained photographs from the lab!

When you show people your photographs that you have shot on film, they get blown away with the results every time! Long live film!

Your favorite analogue camera as of the moment? Why?

My favorite analogue camera at this moment is my Canon AE-1. I recently picked up a 70-210 mm zoom lens for it and I have been taking lots of great street photography shots. But, I can not wait for the weather to pick up so I can get out into the streets with my Lomography Lubitel+ which is already loaded with Provia 400x!

What is the Lomographic camera you’d want to have someday?

I have always wanted to give the Lomo LC-Wide a try!

Any song or movie you live by?

RX Bandits – Overcome

So baby take a axe to your makeup kit
Set ablaze the billboards and their advertisements
Love with all your hearts and never forget
How good it feels to be alive
And strive for your desire
Just cause you can’t see
Your cage doesn’t mean that you are free
When there are laws against nature
But its ok for you to be
Addicted to over the counter prescriptions
And magazines dictate all our human relations
I’m not buying, no I’m not giving in
To a culture that objectifies all of our women
I’m not buying, no I’m not consuming

Share your current favorite Lomograph. Why is this your favorite?

The National Gallery – London my first proper double exposure!

Any Community member you look up to? If so, why him or her?

I love looking through grazie’s photographs. They are so colorful, riddled with sprocket holes, and span a vast array of hues! They are always pleasing to the eye and are an inspiration when I am lacking it!

What are you looking forward to in our Community?

I am looking forward to sharing photographs with other Lomographers, exchanging techniques but most of all film swaps!
