Stratski and Her Weapon of Choice: Holga 120 CFN

Her Holga 120 CFN produces extreme light leaks but Maaike did not let this hinder her from shooting with it. Now, it's her trusty travel buddy and constant party companion. Read on to know more about stratski and her Weapon of Choice - Holga 120 CFN!

Maaike van Stratum aka stratski

Full name: Maaike van Stratum
Lomography: Username: stratski
Location: Amersfoort, Netherlands
Weapon of Choice: Holga 120 CFN

Why is this your Weapon of Choice?

It’s all in the lens! This plastic baby just takes the most gorgeous and dreamy pictures. The sharp center, soft edges, and lovely vignetting never ceased to amaze me. And you can do fun stuff like double exposures and microclicks with it as well.

Any memorable experiences you’ve had while using this Weapon of Choice?

We didn’t really get off on the right foot. The first roll come out completely blank. It was an unmarked roll. I thought it was colored film but it is black and white. The second roll ate up the bits of foam inside the camera, which I have replaced that foam with scraps of cardboard. The indoor pictures in redscale didn’t really work either. But gradually, I got to know my Holga better, and now I couldn’t do without her anymore.

Would you recommend this to other Lomographers? If yes, to whom do you have in mind?

Oh yes, definitely! Anyone who secretly loves Instagram should just get a Holga instead. It’s a really simple and sturdy camera that can take some battering. Although it’s a bit bulky, it’s an excellent camera for travel photography.

When using this, what are you favourite subjects to photograph and why?

Like I said, I love using this camera for travel photography, which in my case usually comes down to trees and mountains. But it’s an excellent party camera as well. A few layers of people partying in different colors of flash always gives great results.

Any tips or tricks with using your Weapon of Choice?

Never forget your black tape and prepare for light leaks. This is the only thing that bugs me about the Holga, but plenty of tape usually works.

Try microclicks. Load some low ISO film or redscale film. Shoot your first frame. Wind the film a little, up to two to five clicks. You’ll notice the clicks when you wind slowly. Then, shoot again. Repeat this a good number of times, around five to 10.
