Then and Now: Modern Movie Posters Get Retro Treatment

It’s easy to imagine old movies being filmed again to suit the preferences of movie goers these days. Cast actors, up the ante when it comes to computer effects, cinematography and the like. But what happens when it’s done the other way around?

Well, that’s exactly what artist and illustrator Peter Stults did with his series of retro-looking movie posters of modern films title “What if..”. It’s just a crazy mix of old graphics, classic actors and actresses, nostalgia, and a good sense of humor.

Stults not only created the posters to look like they were legitimately shot during the Hollywood heyday of the 50s and 60s but he also put an interesting line-up of actors that can measure up to today’s movie roles. As much as we like imagining how things would look like if they were done in a completely different way, Stults may have done that for us already. And we know that this is part of our Then and Now series on the magazine but it really feels like it’s the other way around, much like an anti-thesis. But maybe that’s just me thinking out loud.

“What if…” movie poster of “Drive” by Peter Stults

“What if?” really is the prominent question to be asked in this series of recreated movie posters. And for vintage lovers, you’re welcome. We know that you’re already going fanboy/fangirl crazy over these recreated movie posters. I personally think James Dean would have made quite the heroic driver in a retro version of Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Drive.”

You can see more of Peter Stults’ graphic works on his Behance page.
