Camera Collections: faaabii rediscovers analogue

A web developer by profession and a skater and fingerboarder on the side, Fabian ---or faaabii, as we know him in the community--- divides most of his time between flipping tricks for websites and on boards of different sizes, and indulging in analogue photography. Bored by the crisp reality of digital, he stumbled upon Lomography around five years ago and has been addicted ever since. He now owns over two dozen analogue cameras, a dozen or so accessories, and more than a hundred rolls of film on hand. A round of applause please, for faaabii and his fantastic camera collection!

Hi, Fabian a.k.a. faaabii! How long have you been collecting film gear and how did it start?
When I was eight years old I got my first analogue camera. It was a cheap and simple point and shoot and made funny sounds. I built a photo studio composed of desk pads and shot photos of my toys. I used the camera now and then but somewhere at the age of 11 or 12 it disappeared.

At the age of 17 I rediscovered photography. When I went skateboarding with my friends I became the boy behind the cameras, but I only had a cheap digital camera. From then I always wanted to get a DSLR, but those cameras were way too expensive.

While studying media technologies two good friends and fellow students told me about their own photo laboratory and soon I became part of there team. I got my father’s Canon EOS 500, shot film and developed it by myself. A year later I got my first DSLR and was totally stoked about all these possibilities. Analogue photography faded out of my life again.

Then finally in the end of 2009 I discovered Lomography in a magazine and – in the meantime bored of the digital perfection – I was totally stoked with these colorful charming little photos.

A week later in the very beginning of 2010 I went to the Lomography Gallery Store in Berlin and got my first Lomo camera – the Diana Mini. I had a lot of fun shooting my first films, I visited workshops in the Gallery Store in Berlin and – at least – I wanted more and more cameras. ;)

In 2012 and 2013 I had a little break because I moved and had not possibilities to get my film developed. Only shooting black-and-white wasn’t that funny, I wanted colors!

I finally found my way back into analogue photography when a drugstore reopened in my village in the end of 2013 and I was motivated more than ever. I look for cameras almost every day and spend all my money for films, cameras and my latest project – an own photo laboratory, where I want to develop c41, too! :)

Can you possibly itemize every camera, film roll, and accessory you own?
To be honest, I think I can tell you about the most of my cameras and its accessories, but I will forget some for sure. Let’s give it a try:

Lomo LC-A, Lomo LC-A+, Diana Mini, Diana F+, Konstruktor, Spinner 360, Sprocket Rocket, Horizon Perfekt, Actionsampler, Oktomat, Canon T50, Canon EOS 500, Canon EOS 5, Pentacon Six TL, Exa 1c, Kodak Retinette, Agfa Clack, Smena8, Olympus AF-1, Olympus mju II, Pentax AF Zoom, Fuji Instax 100, Polaroid 636 Close Up and some cheap plastic no names.

This should be a complete list, but there’s no guarantee. I got a lot of accessories for my LC-A+ like the Krab, the Splitzer and the Instant Back. There is a colorflash, a ringflash and the Diana flash as well as some cases/bags. I got a set of spacers for my Pentacon Six TL and an additional viewfinder and three lenses for my Exa 1c. But I think that’s not everything…

Film rolls? Haha… I really don’t know, even my collection is not that big. I will take a picture and you can take a look. I hope thats okay. ;)

Have you used every camera in your collection or do you just adore some of them from the camera shelf?
I’m giving my best to shoot at least one film roll with every camera. I still have one or two cameras I haven’t used till now. When I like the results I keep the camera on my invisible list of potential cameras to go out with. But to tell the truth, in the end I will always take the LC-A+ and/or my Horizon Perfekt. I would use my Pentacon Six, too, but at the moment the shutter don’t work. :(

Will you ever part with your collection?
To be honest I already sold some of my cameras, like a (broken) Lubitel 166+, a LC-Wide, a Minox GT and the Fuji Natura Classica, in 2012 and I still regret it profoundly. This experience showed me that you should never ever sell a camera, no matter how urgently you need money or place for other stuff.

Do you think you’ll ever stop collecting? Why or why not?
That’s a good question. At the moment I can’t think of stopping, because we are always looking for this one camera, which perfectly fits our needs. And when you think, you finally got this special camera, the next one will appear… and the next one… and the next one. ;)

Is there a camera you still don’t own and want to be part of your collection soon? What is this and why?
At the moment I am really happy, because I recently got my own Horizon Perfekt. It was one of the cameras I always wanted, but I could never afford it. Of course, there are always some cameras I’m interested in. Most of them are unpayable, like the Noblex 150, a horizon-style panoramic medium format camera (6×15cm negatives!!!), an original Leica or a Hasselblad. But there are still some affordable cameras like the La Sardina, for example.

Fast Camera Collection Facts
Number of cameras?  Should be 25 or 26…
Number of accessories?  Really? Haha… hard to say… 10-15 items?
Number of films?  I counted it just for you… 107 rolls… woah.
Number of months/years collecting?  Around 2-3 years, I think.
Biggest buy/most expensive items?  LC-A+/LC-Wide
Sweetest steal/cheapest scored items?
Thanks to a Lomography vip voucher I got a Diana F+ for only 5 Euros. At a flea market I got my Exa 1c with tons of additional stuff for only 30 Euros and at least my ebay score, a Horizon Perfekt only used once for 190 Euro.

Most prized possessions/favorite camera, film, and accessory from the collection?
I love the LC-A(+). It’s so small, I can take it with me everywhere and shoot without thinking of the right exposure. Simple and small, but great images. My latest camera, the Horizon Perfekt is great, too. This panoramic view is amazing, I’ve never seen a single picture shot with a Horizon, which I didn’t like. When I should choose a medium format camera I would immediately take the Pentacon Six TL. Looking through it’s light shaft viewfinder opens a completely new world, haha…

My favorite accessory is the LC-A+ Splitzer and the Krab. I got it for my Gran Canaria trip and both granted me some great photos.

I like slide film! And I like it crossed! I love those green and red colors! At the moment I have a lot of Fuji Sensia, but I’m always open to new stuff… and I’m really interested in Lomography Lomo Chrome Purple!

Favorite photo taken with your favorite gear?
My favorite photo/film roll taken with the LC-A+ is definitely the filmswap with lomo-nina. I’ve been to Gran Canaria and she was snowboarding in Switzerland. It was both our first filmswap and we didn’t know what to expect, but the results were amazing. My favorite is that huge giant wheel behind the snowy mountains.

My favorite photo with the Horizon Perfekt till now is that vertical panorama of snowy trees.

And with the Pentacon Six TL I shot a little tricycle in front of my home in Berlin and a bottle cap using all spacers in a park in Berlin.

Any last words?

I like these collections articles. It reminds me I'm not the only one out here who has an obsession and spends every penny he has on film and cameras :D Nice collection @faaabii - and nice shots!
