Object of My Affection: Bikram Yoga

For over two years now I've been practicing Bikram Yoga, and it has already become a passion. Although it has nothing to do with photography, it's also a 100% analogue hobby.

Bikram Yoga is a system of yoga that Bikram Choudhury synthesized from traditional hatha yoga techniques and popularized beginning in the early 1970s. All Bikram Yoga classes run for 90 minutes and consist of the same series of 26 postures, including two breathing exercises. Bikram Yoga is ideally practiced in a room heated to 105°F (≈ 40.6°C) with a humidity of 40%! What a hot affection I have!!!

As I said, it has nothing to do with photography… in a strict sense. But I’ve found some parallels between this practice and shooting photos as a hobby, especially analogue photos.

You must practice to improve. You can read a lot and people can give you many advices, but if you don´t try, there will be no improvements.

You have to focus, concentrate, and forget about everything except what you’re doing. If you don’t, you fall.

It doesn’t matter at which point you’re doing yoga (photos). The only point of comparison if you wish to measure is one from which YOU started.

Analogue photography and yoga are two things I love and that I do because I want to and because they fulfill me. They make me feel free and, probably, that feeling is what keeps me hooked to both.

“It’s never too late, it’s never too bad, and you’re never too old or sick to start from scratch once again,” Bikram Choudhury says about yoga. Don’t you think you can say the same about analogue photography?

Awesome Susie! I did Bikram for a couple of months, have wanted to get back into it, and this certainly is inspiring. :)
