Old-school rock fans out there will surely remember this one. This installment of Midweek Music Video takes us back to a time when R.E.M. was just in its early years as a rock band from Athens, Georgia. Mixing their new rock sounds with views and ideas that made for classic folk rock songs, R.E.M. will always be considered as a moving force in the early years of alternative rock.

“The One I Love” is as simple as it gets. The lyrics and even the music video for the song caters to the simple idea – members of the band are shown playing in their hometown while other effects and footage that accompany the lyrics are being shown. Recorded in 1987, everything in the song and music video is just screaming with old-school hits to accompany you on a good analogue day.

The fading wail of lead singer Michael Stipe ends the song with a firecracker exploding, scattering embers all over the dark backdrop. It’s a fitting finale to guitarist Michael Buck’s riff that helped make R.E.M. one of the most celebrated and influential bands of their time. The band R.E.M. officially split up in 2011.
