Peer Into a Camera Obscura World with Abelardo Morell

We’re familiar with the wonders of pinhole photography here in the community. That little light-proof box with a surgical hole punched into it can produce great photos but what happens when you take it up a notch? A notch put up so high by camera obscura photographer Abelardo Morell.

Guys, if you still haven’t seen Abelardo Morell’s photographs then we suggest you drop anything that you’re doing and just look at his camera obscura photographs. The veteran photographer is known for his large-scale camera obscura shots that are just screaming with detail and style.

Harking back to the days of early photography, Morell creates these huge “art installations” by converting room after room into camera obscura devices to capture ornate scenes of the outside world. Using precision pinholes and a mix of lenses, Morell projects images into the rooms with the upside-down look that is characteristic of the camera obscura.

Morell poses the room to become a huge canvas or photo paper and shoots the carefully orchestrated scene with his 8×10 view camera. The enlarged prints he makes showcases a deft series of photographs that superimposes the outside world into plain-looking rooms and heavily detailed art pieces.

Abelardo Morell is a Boston-based photographer and his works have appeared on various galleries and art institutions in the United States. You can view his camera obscura photographs as well as his earlier works on his website here.

All information and photos used in this article were sourced from Abelardo Morell’s site and Lens Culture.

Morell's pinhole works are wonderful indeed, and I can't compete with them. But I did shoot an album inspired by his other works, which you can see here if you're interested: http://www.lomograph(…)ardo-morell
