John Lennon and Yoko Ono donning Santa Claus costumes and sitting beside Mary Hopkins

Ho, ho, ho! Merry Christmas from John and Yoko (and Mary Hopkin, too)!

Two more icons from the 1960s don the Santa Claus suit in their efforts to channel the cheery Christmas mood — this time, we have the music world’s power couple John Lennon and Yoko Ono! The pair dressed up in the famous red and white costume for the Christmas party of The Beatles’ Apple Records in 1968. Sitting beside them is Welsh folk singer Mary Hopkin, one of the first musicians to sign to the Apple record label.

Several years later, John and Yoko dressed as Santa Claus would be on the cover for one of the promotions for Happy Xmas, a song they wrote and released in the US in 1971 (and 1972 in the UK) as a single for John & Yoko/Plastic Ono Band. Although the song was originally a protest song against the Vietnam War, it has since become a popular Christmas song and has been covered by generations of artists.
