For this week's Reel vs. Real feature, we bring you a 2013 biographical film which chronicles the last two years of Princess Diana's life, as well as her two relationships from this period.
The extraordinary life of Lady Diana Frances Spencer — later known as Princess Diana when she married Prince Charles, Prince of Wales in 1981 — has been the subject of many works of art, literature, and cinema/television. The latest of these is a 2013 biographical drama film simply entitled Diana, based on Kate Snell’s 2001 book “Diana: Her Last Love,” and directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel.
The biopic, which stars British-Australian actress Naomi Watts for the title role, details the events in the last two years of Princess Diana’s life after her divorce from Prince Charles. Her relationships with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan and Egyptian billionaire Dodi Fayed were depicted in the film as well.
Diana had its world premiere in London on September 5, 2013 and was released in the United Kingdom on September 20, 2013. While Watt’s performance was generally praised, the biopic was found wanting, failing to attract moviegoers and earning poor reception from the press and film critics.
