While experts say it was not meant to be a conventional portrait, the “Girl with a Pearl Earring” remains to be one of the best known and celebrated works of Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. It has been fascinating many creative minds generations after it was made. One of them was American historical novelist Tracy Chevalier, who imagined the circumstances of the painting’s creation in her novel. Her book, in turn, was adapted into the 2003 drama film directed by Peter Webber.

In the book and the film, a shy girl named Griet (Scarlett Johansson) gets sent to work as a maid in the household of painter Johannes Vermeer (Colin Firth), his wife Catharina (Essie Davis), and his mother-in-law Maria Thins (Judy Parfitt). When Vermeer comes across Griet as she tidies up his studio, he learns of her appreciation for painting, light, and color. Griet, who develops a fascination for the painter and his works, eventually agrees to be his assistant, mixing paints for him and doing other tasks. As Vermeer gets commissioned by a wealthy patron to paint a portrait of Griet, he struggles to find that one central piece that will draw eyes into the painting.
