SUMO: A Supersized Book of Erotica and Fashion Photography by Helmut Newton

Dubbed as the "King of Kink", Helmut Newton had a lot of things going on in his photographic style – sexually charged images, varying degrees of undress and the undeniable appeal of erotica. The famed photographer was known for his black and white fashion photographs that were unapologetic to say the least.

The fashion photographer’s long career was characterized by the appearance of his works on countless fashion magazine pages and spreads. In 1999, Helmut Newton along with his wife June Newton (aka Alice Springs) commissioned writers, art directors, editors, designers and book binders to do an ambitious effort to capture the iconic photographer’s massive body of work. The results were nonetheless big – weighing at an astounding 30 kg and featuring 400 photographs of Newton in 480 pages.

The book is titled SUMO and was not a coincidence. Aside from the fact that the mere book weighs as much as 30kg, the book retails for the price of 15,000 U.S. Dollars. This colossal collection of Helmut Newton’s work encompasses his long career in fashion photography and the first copy was auctioned at Berlin for a staggering 430,000 dollars. SUMO comes with a stand by Philippe Starck for easy viewing.

Published by Taschen, SUMO features the life and works of Newton with every flick of a page. Here’s a documentary of The Making of the Most Expensive Book in the World by Julian Benedikt that also shows a side of the famed photographer in the words of the people he had worked with during his career.

All information and photos used in this article were sourced from Taschen – SUMO, Film’s Not Dead and Brain Pickings.
