Then and Now: Historical Figures Reimagined in the Modern Day

Ever wondered why monarchs, important people and historical figures looked so stiff and rigid in their portraits? Well, we did too but saw them undergo makeovers with a modern take on what they would look like if they were alive today.

William Shakespeare, Queen Elizabeth I and Marie Antoinette among others were given a complete and modern makeover in their portraits. The historical figures are given new threads, an updated look and physical characteristics if they were still living with us today.

History channel Yesterday in the UK commissioned different artists to upgrade the look of these historical figures for their show The Secret Life Of. The portraits look hip and fresh but still hark back to the well-known portraits that we have all familiarized ourselves with. All artworks were created under the discerning eye of award-winning academic and historian Dr. Suzannah Lipscomb so that every piece was sure to be accurate in terms of their portrayal in the modern age of 2013.

One of the most notable changes in the looks of these historical figures are their hair styles and the clothes that seem to fit their more modern lifestyle while still retaining historical relevance to their characters.

Out with the old, in with the new is probably what stuck most in all of these updated portraits and frankly, they do look like the part. You never know, you might just see William Shakespeare walking down the road with his hip and edgy style, contemplating on the next act in his new play to be shown on Broadway next fall.
