LA Times photographer Jay Clendenin has worked on projects most of us can only dream of. He has photographed Hollywood stars, super athletes, rock stars, you name it. U2’s Bono, Robert Downey Jr., and American President Barrack Obama are just a few of the prominent personalities who are part of his portfolio.

One of the amazing things about Clendenin is that he continuously attempts to outdo himself with every new project. He admitted having a penchant for challenges in this interview a few months back and his previous projects attest to that. While he does shoot digitally, Clendenin also shoots on film. He took multiple exposure photos during a recent Coachella festival and photographed several Olympians using a large format camera and a century-old Petzval lens.

Clendenin gave a prototype of the new Petzval lens a test drive and successfully produced a gallery of rather interesting images from the Toronto International Film Festival and a few shots taken in Los Angeles. The selection includes a few portraits, including that of actor Jake Gyllenhaal, and a few snaps of cosmopolitan scenery.

Below are more of the images, taken with the Petzval prototype and a Canon 5d Mark III.

“The biggest draw to the lens is the natural fall-off of focus and vignetting at the edges of the frame. From my experience, to best see the “swirl” of the lens’ optics at the edges, often referred to as “bokeh” in Lomography’s promotion of the lens, you should keep your subject at the center of the frame and have a textured background."

I am with @herbert-4 ...I wish lomography made maybe a few different variations of this lens with different mounts... M42 would be sensible to me as many of us use old Yashicas, Pentax and Zenits etc... making this lens F and EF mount to me seems that this was aimed with subtley prioritising DSLR users...

This lens would of worked great M42... I would of bought one.
