Snippets and Vignettes: Off to the Thrift Shop!

Owning a camera is probably one of the coolest things in the world. You know, you get to own your memories in prints and have them pinned on your cork board for instant trips to memory lane. It just lets you capture the moment and preserve it. Years later as you look at your wrinkled hands, you’ll have this sigh of relief and a smirk on your face. “What a ride.”

This coming weekend, I’m planning to go on a trip to Baguio City, the summer capital of the Philippines for a camera hunting expedition. I think it’ll be fun since my time here in Lomography has given me so much to think about analogue photography. Long story short, it’s going to be a whole lot of fun from here on out.

A friend of mine recently bought an old Instax Mini from a thrift shop in Baguio. He’s a mountaineer and also a photography lover. He found it on a shelf, all dusted out but still intact at a thrift shop that sells oddities and trinkets. In fact, he was the first one to unbox it and all the contents were there. That isn’t the surprise at all. The biggest kick in this story is that he bought it for just 130 Philippine Pesos. Roughly converted, it’s about 4 U.S. Dollars. Also, he was able to get 30 pieces of Instax Mini film, again from a thrift shop. Now that’s freaking awesome to quote Macklemore’s Thrift Shop. And a little sneak peek, he just told me that he also got an Instax Mini 20 for just 100 Pesos! He said he didn’t post it on his page since people might be on a torch party to raid his camera stash.

Was also looking around the net and stumbled upon the Polariod self portraits of Ana Marcell. She keeps on shooting with her Polaroid and honestly, it makes me want to shoot, too. The instant gratification of seeing your prints and the classic cool of owning a piece of photographic history is just too awesome to pass. Hopefully, I get to find something worth writing about in another article. Wish me luck!
