It's one thing to travel with a handful of cameras and a bunch of films, and another to roam around with a large format camera and a mobile darkroom! Marvel at her impressive travel snap and the amazing stories that come with them after the jump!
Cameras have become travel essentials for adventurers and globe-trotters, all the more so in this technology-driven age. But, instead of lugging around state-of-the-art digital cameras, Brooklyn-based photographer Lisa Elmaleh chose to travel with a large format wet plate camera and a mobile darkroom.
Lisa has been traversing across the United States with Fitzgerald Fitzwilliam Fitzgeorge, her 8″ × 10″ camera, with which she creates large format photos on glass. The truck of her 1996 Toyota Tacoma has been converted into a mobile darkroom, allowing her to process the sensitized glass plates on the go. Inspired by the iconic photographers of the American West (like the legendary Ansel Adams), Lisa’s impressive photos of beautiful landscapes and interesting people in rural America tell us travel stories that are as extraordinary as her chosen medium.
