Gerhard Marx’s Mosaic Depicts an Aerial Shot of Johannesburg

Artist Gerhard Marx’s three-ton colossal sculptural mosaic looks exactly like a photograph of the South African city of Johannesburg from afar!

Presented last month at the 2013 FNB Joburg Art Fair, Marx’s 56-panel “Vertical Aerial, Johannesburg 2013” was produced by the Spier Architectural Arts and took seven professional mosaic artists and nine apprentices working on the project for five whole months! Some of the materials the team used for the mosaic were “natural and engineered stone, ceramic elements, and Venetian glass” and enclosed in a steel support and frame measuring 3,200mm x 5,600mm.

In a video uploaded on Vimeo by the Spier Architectural Arts, its founding director Jeanetta Blignaut and artist Sam Nhlengethwa detail how the entire project was conceptualized and eventually executed.
