Making Memories: Making Travel Memories Count with Film

I don't know why, but my film photographs seem to give me bigger, better, brighter memories of my adventures and misadventures.

When I started traveling frequently with friends I was also just a few months into my journey with film photography. I had already amassed a Holga, a Nikon FE2, a Vivitar Ultra Wide and Slim, and a FED 3 shortly before I went on my first birthday trip. I never traveled without a film camera or two (or four) since then.

I do bring along with me a digital compact when I’m going places, but I found that the handful of photos that I keep from each roll of film bear more meaning and memories to me as compared to hundreds of photos from my digital camera’s memory card. Also, I like how it feels like it’s just me, my camera/s, and the scene before me whenever I pause to take a picture; all the noise and activity surrounding me seem to coalesce with each frame I burn on film. Sometimes, if I stare at any of my travel snaps in film long enough, I could hear the waves crashing, the cars honking, the people chattering idly. Personal preference definitely plays a part in it, but come on, I couldn’t have gotten such lovely * cough * travel snaps with my digital compact — unless I shamelessly photoshop them — don’t you think?

Some say film isn’t dead yet but it’s dying, but I think life is too short for me to worry myself to exhaustion about that. As long as there are some films for me to pack along with my cameras and travel essentials, I will definitely be making my travel memories count with film.

What about you? Has shooting in film also made your travel snaps even more memorable?

@eva_eva Actually, I'll be in Penang again by the end of January next year, just in time to experience the Chinese New Year! :)

Most of the time you'll have that feeling "oh! I remember shooting this!" then you feel you're there just by looking at the print ;)
