Newcomer of the Week: Mnella

Lomography came during the right time in his life; when he was getting sick of creating "fake analogue photos" and wanted to find a hobby where can continue his artistic pursuits.

Coming from Finland, this week’s newcomer has heard of Lomography for quite a long time already. But then he ignored it and tried other things. Several years after, he came across it again and decided never to look back. That aside from bridging and learning cultures! Interesting, eh? Let’s know more about Matti Amnell or mnella as he is this week’s featured newcomer!

Name: Matti Amnell
Lomography Home: http://www.lomography.com/homes/mnella
Location: Helsinki, Finland
Current film cameras: Canon AE-1 Program, Lomography Fisheye 2, Lomography Diana F+, and Lomography Lubitel 166+

Please tell us a little something about yourself.

I’m an artist by training and conviction but for the last fifteen years I’ve been working in a telecommunications company. It doesn’t leave me as much time as I’d like to for my artistic pursuits, but it pays the bills. I’m a three-time immigrant, stuck between languages and cultures. I love traveling slowly, spending as much time as possible getting to know new cultures. I cook every day. It’s satisfying to create something useful and tangible that others can enjoy.

How did you find the Community and who/what convinced you to join?

I had heard of Lomography back in the 90s but had since then completely forgotten about it. I saw an article on the Petzval Kickstarter project on the web and was intrigued. Before backing the project I investigated the company behind it, and found the Community. This came at an opportune moment for me as I was growing tired of certain aesthetic limitations of digital photography. I was taking more and more ‘fake analog’ pictures using filters and realized I should get back to film instead. So I joined the Community to explore the possibilities.

As you have read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?

Rule number 1: Take your camera everywhere you go. The others – I’m not there yet, but maybe some day.

In this digital age, why still film?

The aesthetic qualities of film; the grain, the colors, the unexpected effects. Some of these can be simulated digitally, but they remain just that: simulations.

Any song or movie you live by? Please share.

“We Were Gonna,” and pretty much the whole album “Escape from the Dragon House’” by Dengue Fever

What are you looking forward to in our Community?

Inspiration. I have never formally studied photography and started doing commercial work before I was even in university — my photos financed a part of my travels. Because of this I have never experimented with photography as much as I would have liked. I even got so much in a rut I stopped taking pictures for many years and only restarted when I could see it as a hobby. Looking at the great photos posted by people on the site will hopefully give me the push I need to loosen up and try new things.

Your favorite analogue camera as of the moment? Why?

As a child, I learned to shoot with my father’s Czech twin lens reflex camera so the Lubitel 166+ was a must for me. I’m still discovering all it can do but it already has made me realize how lazy I had become when I was only using DSLRs and camera phones. When you can’t leave your decisions to the computer, your brain gets activated.

What is the Lomographic camera you’d want to have someday?

The next time I get some extra money, I’ll be spending it on a Lomo LC-A, one of the limited editions if I get really flushed with cash.

Your favorite section or page in our Lomography site?

The Tipster section. I’m trying to absorb as much as possible from the shared knowledge, and I’m creating a list of things to try out.

Share your current favorite Lomograph. Why?

Your current favorite should always be your latest work, so you don’t get stuck in the past.

It’s just a casual snap of a café I was passing by but I love the warm red shadows.
