Today in History (1953): John F. Kennedy marries Jacqueline Bouvier

On this same day in 1953, then Senator John F. Kennedy married his fiancé, Jacqueline Bouvier, at St. Mary’s Church in Newport, Rhode Island.

The beautiful bride wore an ivory silk gown designed by Ann Lowe, an African-American designer. The Catholic ceremonial rites were attended by 750 guests and 450 more joined the celebration at the reception in Hammersmith Farm. The newlyweds danced to Meyer Davis Orchestra’s rendition of “I Married an Angel.”

Jacqueline “Jackie” Bouvier belonged to a prominent New York family and met then United States Representative John Fitzgerald “Jack” Kennedy at a dinner function in May 1952. Despite Kennedy’s ensuing political career, the relationship grew and the couple’s engagement was officially announced on June 25, 1953. They wed roughly three months after the announcement.

From the looks on their faces in the photos below, Jack and Jackie’s wedding was certainly a glorious and memorable event for everyone who attended.
