Unmasked Godzilla taking a break and sipping tea after filming his terrifying scenes

Japan's legendary giant monster needs his cup of tea after filming those intense scenes, so an assistant rushes to accommodate his request.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim may be all the rage this summer, but the award-winning Mexican director was quick to say what inspired his colossal face-off between monster and machine: Japan’s Kaiju, whose best known representative is the iconic Godzilla. The legendary colossal beast first appeared in the 1954 science fiction film directed by Ishihiro Honda (who pretty much directed all the Godzilla films until 1975) and has since become a pop culture icon around the world.

The behind-the-scene photo above shows Godzilla unmasked — Japanese actor Haruo Nakajima — taking a break and sipping a cup of tea after what we can assume to be an explosive performance spreading terror and wrecking havoc on a scale model city.

As a bonus, here’s an adorable a fascinating clip showing Haruo Nakajima putting on the Godzilla suit for the last time in 1983 for a shoot for Uchusen magazine, and seeing if he can still pull the cute menacing moves that frightened Japanese moviegoers out of their wits almost 30 years ago:
