The Stories Within Pictures #18: The Beach

The beaches in Finland might not be the best ones in Europe, but they are probably most enjoyed by their visitors. Imagine spending long, cold and dark winter. Can you imagine that? Then it is quite easy to imagine how sun, beach and sea is needed during the Finnish summer.

Penny was getting ready for the trip to the beach, when the bell rang. She knew who it might be, so she opened the door still wearing her pajamas.

“Hey, you are supposed to be ready,” her boyfriend tried to sound serious and strict.

“I know, I know. I am almost ready. Do not worry.”

“Is it really necessary to take three cameras?” he asked her when he saw her packing the most needed things for the beach.

“I have seen Finnish beaches only in winter for now, so the answer is yes! I am sure it will be magical.”

“Well, you might be disappointed with our ‘magical beaches.’” And a strange grin appeared on his face when he said it.

“What is this grin about?”

“You will see.”

After a longer walk through the park, which looked more like a deep forest then a city park, they finally saw behind the birches and pines the sea. They could even smell it and hear it. The wet and fishy air combined with calm splashing of waves, squeaking of seagulls, and children’s giggles. Then the whole scenery unfolded in front of them. The sand was not exactly golden or white and they had to share it with some duck-family and some seagulls too. Similarly, the sea was not really deep blue. It was rather brown and thicker than the sea, in which she had swum before. However, there was more giggle, humming and laugh than she’s ever heard on the beach. Some people were drinking beer; some were enjoying strawberries, while children were jumping in water, having fun despite the cold sea. It was a picture like from those ads on sun lotions and summer holidays, but this one was with the real feeling of happiness and enjoying of the sun.

“So what do you think? Missing the white Greek sand and deep blue water, right?”

“No, not really. All is as it should be,” she gave him the wide smile and took a photo of their sunny moment.
