The man who would become Maverick, Lestat, and Jerry Maguire was born on this same day in 1962.
Tom Cruise is one of the most prominent Hollywood stars of his generation. He first sparked our interest in 1983’s Risky Business, caught everyone else’s attention in Top Gun, frightened us in Interview with theVampire, and made us all fall in love in his title role in Jerry Maguire, for which he won a Golden Globe for Best Actor.
Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, otherwise known simply as Tom Cruise, was born on July 3, 1962 in Syracuse, New York to Mary Lee, a special education teacher and Thomas Cruise Mapother III, an electrical engineer. The family is of German, Irish, and English ancestry.
You’ll be surprised to know that before becoming one of the world’s most bankable stars and portraying the role of a pilot, a race car soldier, a vampire, and many others, Cruise attended a seminary decades ago in the hope of becoming a Catholic priest. It probably really wasn’t for him, considering his stellar good looks and undeniable charm. He was meant to be a star!
The Oscar-nominated and Golden Globe-winning American actor has appeared in over 30 films, romancing co-stars on screen and off screen as well. He has been linked to a number of actresses—-and married a few—-the most recent of which is Katie Holmes, whom has since separated from him after filing for divorce in 2012.
