Here's a social commentary on the history behind our new Konstruktor camera! Constructivism rejected the idea of autonomous art and favored art with a social purpose. Instead of work being kept in a museum for high-brow observation, Russians saw art as a way to sell ideas to the masses.
The artistic and architectural philosophy of Constructivism came to be in 1919 Russia, favoring art towards a Communist purpose in the new Soviet Union. The New Economic Policy reintroduced a limited state capitalism, now competing with commercial businesses, and Constructivist artists further manipulated the ideology to aid in this movement.
The poet-artist Vladimir Mayakovsky and (Alexander) Rodchenko worked together and called themselves “advertising constructors.” Together they designed eye-catching images featuring bright colours, geometric shapes, and bold lettering. The lettering of most of these designs was intended to create a reaction, and function emotionally – most were designed for the state-owned department store Mosselprom in Moscow, for pacifiers, cooking oil, beer and other quotidian products, with Mayakovsky claiming that his ‘nowhere else but Mosselprom’ verse was one of the best he ever wrote.

Constructivism played a key role in influencing major trends in the 20th century (like the Bauhas school) and not just in terms of art, but also Consumerism. There are pieces of Constructivist art hiding in plain sight and sales, from film to fashion, to music and politics, and eventually back to art.
