Friday Movie Flashback: Hairspray (1988)

This week's featured film for Friday Movie Flashback is John Waters's Hairspray.

Since this year’s Tony Awards will be held this coming Sunday, I’ve decided to feature a film from which an award-winning Broadway adaptation was made: John Waters’s Hairspray.

The film is set in 1962 Baltimore and tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a pleasantly plump teenager who pursues stardom as a dancer in The Corny Collins Show and fights for racial integration. It was a time when hairspray was part of practically every woman’s daily ritual, and colored people were not allowed to associate with the whites.

We have a very intriguing cast here. Ricki Lake stars as Tracy Turnblad, Jerry Stiller portrays the role of his father, Wilbur, and transvestite performer Divine plays Tracy’s mom, Edna. And as if that wasn’t interesting enough, Debbie Harry, the siren of punk-new wave band Blondie is Velma Von Tussle and Phillip “Sonny” Bono of Sonny & Cher is Franklin Von Tussle, parents of Tracy’s arch rival, Amber Von Tussle, played by Colleen Fitzpatrick.

If you’ve seen the musical or the 2007 remake, then you just have to see where the Hairspray phenomenon started! You’ll love characters, you’ll adore the wardrobe and production design, you’ll appreciate the musical score and cinematography —-all so retro, oh so vintage!
Watch the trailer of the film after the jump!
