Spinner 360 Master Alec Thorsen Interview

Alec Thorsen is a local Chicago shooter, who explores all possibilities of image capture. He's even coming out with a short film featuring the Spinner 360. We picked his brain to find out what inspires him, and why he loves photography as much as we do. Be sure to watch his movie trailer for Bryan Walters Movie and stay tuned for future screenings.

Greetings! I’m Alec Thorsen, a 29 year old writer/director/lomographer from Chicago whose short film Bryan Walters will be coming out this summer. I love entertaining people and I love analogue photography. This project helped to further my understanding of both.

Bryan Walters is a 12 minute short film about a guy who drives from Chicago to Michigan and back on a whim, doing a favor for the employees at his local tavern. They need a sign that can’t be delivered soon enough and he wants to make some cash in his spare time. Bryan entertains himself and documents the trip by taking photos with a Spinner 360 camera along the way.

We originally set out to tell a road story. A few months into writing the screenplay, a friend let me borrow his Spinner and I was quite taken with it. Soon after our character was re-written as a Lomographer who would use this arbitrary road trip to experience the world, see new things and work on his craft.

Shooting Bryan Walters took 7 days spread out over the course of 3 weeks in the fall of 2012. During that time we shot at a bar in Chicago, a sign shop in St. Clair, Michigan and much of the road in between.

In the 12 minute story, 4 Spinner photos are taken by our main character. The audience gets to see Bryan’s 360 panoramas on screen immediately after the character composes a picture and rips the cord of the Spinner camera. The Spinner is probably my favorite Lomography camera because of its versatility and unique skill set but I also have a Fisheye, two Holgas, and a Diana Mini that I shoot with often. I’ve also started to delve into the world of Lomokino…
