The Lomographer at Work: Retail in Kuala Lumpur's Golden Triangle

Work takes up most of our time -- 5 days a week, 4 weeks a month, for months on end, documenting this daily routine helps punctuate the monotony of it all! I am however blessed to have an interesting job in an interesting part of the city. Here's how it goes!

I work as a Retail Associate at one of the top retail companies currently in the country — the store I work at also happens to be the very first and the biggest store nationwide. It’s smack in the middle of Kuala Lumpur’s Golden Triangle — Bukit Bintang!

My mode of transport varies according to the days and shifts I’m allocated — whenever I take the train, I pass by the Petronas Twin Towers and the Pavilion KL fountain.

If I drive, I either park at the slightly seedy Jalan Imbi where there’s cheap-rate parking, or in Fahrenheit88 itself if I’m running late or feeling lazy to walk that far.

I usually carpool with my best friend whenever I drive, and he’s one of my most favorite subjects to shoot during workdays — even when we have just arrived at work and are walking to the store.

But most of photos are of course taken during my breaks — lunch with my colleagues, sometimes by myself, sometimes with my best friend. Lunch/tea and/or tea/dinner breaks, depending on my shifts, see me rotating about the small variations of joints I frequent for my meals.

Mostly, it’s hawker food and mamak fare for the heavy meals, for tea breaks it varies from CoffeeStain by Joseph and Pacific Coffee in Fahrenheit88 to Toast Box in Pavilion across the street to Lot10 every now and then. Sometimes, I’m content to just sit in the staff room. Other times, I accompany my best friend on smoke and outdoor air breaks.

It’s not all photos of my food though! Break times are of course best for… breaks! Working in a mall means I know the back staircases and ins and outs of the building; routes not normally frequented by customers and patrons. In addition, I sometimes take the little time off to document what I wear for the day, especially if it’s some of my favorite pieces!

Working in a mall has its advantages, especially when you’re in such a bustling part of town with activities constantly taking place all around you. Tourists are abundant, people are everywhere, there is hype always. I get to document the festivals reflected by the decorations put up, I even get to document the progress and changes that the city’s face goes through.

But of course, nothing is better than leaving work feeling exhausted with productivity from a crazy, busy day.

Occasionally, if I carpooled we will stop for food on the way back to our car. Hunger simply cannot wait after 8 working hours of walking, running, climbing on the shop floor!

I really enjoy my job — for though it can be extremely exhausting and has its stressful times, it’s nature and location give me plenty to photograph and that’s more than I can hope for when it comes to my hobby in analogue photography!

What does your day at work look like?
