Newcomer of the Week: Judascapoeira

Most members of our Community turn to analogue photography because of boredom or because they want to try something new. That's the common reason we usually hear and we're happy because of the passion they eventually build for this craft!

But this featured Lomographer has an interesting story behind his analogue discovery. A forensic photographer, Andres or judascapoeira in our Community turned into analogue for reasons quite unique. Learn more about him as he is our Newcomer of the Week!

How did you find out about the Community and who/what convinced you to join?

At the time, I was taking forensic photography lessons and started to look for an analogue camera that was inexpensive. Then one afternoon I went out with my very good friend Clara and found a bunch of Lomography cameras in a store. I was curious about them, examined their toy-like structure and couldn’t make that curiosity disappear, but still didn’t bought any of them that day; then I started to research about them, saw the Lomography site and a while later I found a BBC documentary about the Lomographic International Society and loved the whole story behind the LOMO factory — the strange intervention of Putin before he was president and how the Community was formed. We could say I convinced myself when after knowing the idea behind the Community, I found myself shooting film with the Diana F+. Certainly it wouldn’t be useful for the crime scenes, but surely it would help me capture the depths and heights of human nature.

Any inspirations when it comes to taking film photographs?

My inspiration is the society itself and the surrealist country I live in (André Breton himself called it “surrealist by nature”). There is always something happening, sometimes there are so many things that seem so unreal in here that it feels like a dream most of the time.

Any song or movie you live by?

I think there isn’t just one, but if just one existed it would be a song, something between Dying in a Moment of Splendor by Human Drama, Buddha of Suburbia by David Bowie, and Al Lado del Camino by Fito Páez.

As you have read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?

That would be Rule #10: Don’t Worry About Any Rules.

In this digital age, why still film?

At first I was looking for film cameras because it is the most credible format for a judge here in Mexico but then discovered the variety of wonderful effects that you can have on film and if you try to imitate them with digital manipulations they look very crappy.

What are you looking forward to in our Community?

To share ideas, images, ways of life, and to spread the Community here in Mexico City. Now that I found analogue photography I don’t want to let it die in here.

Your favorite analogue camera as of the moment? Why?

The Diana F+. It is a unique tool to make interpretations of reality through its plastic lens. It has a lot of possibilities.

What is the Lomographic camera you’d want to have someday?

A true Russian LOMO, with real Russian lens and the LOMO logo in Cyrillic letters. I have a special love for the magic of Russian culture and objects.

Your favorite section or page in our Lomography site?

LomoHomes and the Magazine section.

Share your current favorite Lomograph, could be yours or a friend’s. Why?

I love this one; it takes me back and forth through time, it gives me the illusion that there was a moment when people felt walking through golden streets and could really feel the clouds come down by just looking at skyscrapers.
