Beautiful Disasters Captured the Analogue Way with the LC-Wide

Have you ever gone to a trip, took pictures with gusto, then find out that you made a critical mistake when your prints come back? This is what happened when I accidentally left the half-frame mask in my LC-Wide on a recent trip to Hong Kong. The pictures still turned out great... beautiful disasters, in my opinion!

I have been looking forward to my Easter holiday with my college friends. We planned to meet in Macau then hop over to Hong Kong, and for me it was a perfect chance to use my LC-Wide. You see, I’ve been attempting to capture photos on my trips to Hong Kong (my favorite city next to home, of course), but it always ends up a disaster. On my first try using a Fujica ST-801, the whole rolls of film were exposed as a result of the film rolls passing through security checks at the airport. How can I forget that? I was so bummed out. So this was my shot to make up for that disaster.

The weather wasn’t cooperative, since that weekend it was raining most of the time, and not a glimpse of Mr. Sun was to be seen. But that didn’t deter me from capturing snapshots of the idyllic Coloane island to the bustling streets of Central and the peaceful Nan Lian Park in Diamond Hill. When I got home, I happily brought my films to the developer for processing. When I got them back, I was shocked! How come the pictures were half black?

Then, it hit me. I used my LC-Wide previously with the half-frame mask inserted, and I must have forgotten to take it out. What?! Not again. But, it turns out, the pictures were still beautiful. So I decided to crop out the black parts, and enjoy these beautiful disasters.

So next time, when using the LC-Wide, check first if you have the masks inserted before loading your precious films. Although, maybe you’ll end up having beautiful disasters as well.

The Lomo LC-Wide boasts the newly-developed 17mm Minigon Ultra-Wide Angle lens. This 35mm camera wonder is the perfect companion for your photo expeditions. It produces eye-catching splashes of colour with astonishing saturation and contrasts with the added versatility of 3 different formats. I have just gone and done the exact same thing. Just got back from travelling around Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. Got my films back today and they have all been shot with the half frame mask. Wasn't thrilled at first, and wanted to see if anyone else had done this. Hoping mine are beautiful disasters too now. :)
